Macnamara is a beautiful electorate filled with diversity, culture, sport and hospitality all wrapped around our precious bay in the inner-south of Melbourne. Macnamara is situated on the lands walked for centuries by the Boon Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation.
From the wharfies who worked and built our beautiful Port Melbourne to the modern multiculturalism that is South Melbourne, to the beauty and evolution of Albert Park, to the coffee and culture of St Kilda, to the picture-perfect streets of Elwood, to the cool new addition of Windsor and to the place where I was born and raised in Caulfield, the electorate of Macnamara is as diverse as it is iconic.
It is home to many wonderful festivals and local jewels that attract visitors from all over the world. Our local schools do an outstanding job of educating our future leaders while our hospitals provide world-class healthcare.
Macnamara encompasses all of the City of Port Phillip and parts of the Cities of Glen Eira, Melbourne and Stonnington. It comprises all of the State division of Albert Park and parts of the divisions of Caulfield, Prahran and Brighton.
Formerly known as Melbourne Ports, our electorate was renamed for the 2019 election in honour of Dame Jean Macnamara, a medical researcher and doctor who discovered there is more than one type of the polio virus and worked extensively with children suffering from poliomyelitis, training doctors and physiotherapists in the management of the disease; and was a pioneer in the usage of myxomatosis to combat wild rabbit plagues. Macnamara was a pioneer for women and children across the country and made a remarkable contribution to medical research. She was a fine Australian and we’re proud to have her name on our seat.
